Shaping The Next Generation Of Talent
In 2023, the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) accredited the Transnet Assessment Centre to train Industrial and Organisational Psychologists (IOPs) and Psychometrists. The five-year accreditation allows Transnet to help develop future professionals while creating valuable career opportunities within the organisation..
From Classroom to Career
The internship programmes help graduates gain practical workplace experience and apply what they have learned through their studies.
IOP interns complete a 12-month programme, while Psychometrist interns complete a six-month programme before qualifying to write the HPCSA Board examinations.
Entry into the programme is competitive, and candidates must meet strict academic and professional requirements:
- Psychometrist interns must hold an Honours degree in Industrial Psychology or a Bachelor of Psychology and gain acceptance into a university-led programme that requires a minimum 70% pass mark, interviews and psychometric assessments.
- IOP interns enter the programme after completing a Master’s degree and dissertation, ready to apply their knowledge and research in a practical workplace environment.
Hands-On Learning Across Transnet
The programme goes beyond theory. IOP interns rotate through a range of Human Resources functions, including Talent Acquisition, the Assessment Centre, Change Management, Performance Management, Employee Relations and Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) services. Depending on the programme, interns spend between one week and two months in each area.

The programme supports Transnet employees who would like to become Industrial and Organisational Psychologists or Psychometrists, while also creating opportunities for students from partner institutions, including the University of Johannesburg.
